I teach high school English, and over the past several years, my passion for my job has been challenged in more ways than I can count. I have taken on several roles in my building that have demonstrated some of the less desirable aspects of the profession, and I actively work against getting jaded on a daily basis.
To this end, about a month ago, my husband and I were having one of our bi-annual “what would we do if we won the lottery” conversations, and the jackpot was like $600,000,000. I began to weave this complicated fantasy in which I founded a school that perfectly represented all of my ideals as an educator. One which met the needs of each child, but not at the expense of others or at the expense of treating teachers as professionals.
I have not been able to get this school out of my head since its conception. As a matter of fact, every time I feel down or frustrated about something that happens at work, I use it as fuel for another policy or philosophical stance that my school will embody.
I honestly feel like every “problem” in education could be solved by a teacher with proper training, planning time, and resources. My goal for this blog is to put all of these ideas in one place. My dream is that one day, other teachers might contribute their ideas to my ramblings.
Ultimately, when my husband inevitably wins $600,000,000 on a scratchy lottery he picks up on a Friday afternoon, our business plan will be all set!
